Google Indoor Mapping Data Format (IMDF)

IMDF is Google's tool that enables anyone to create indoor maps apps and services using the same highly accurate and detailed data on any app, website, or operating system. Wayfinding platform supports exporting the data in IMDF form. The customer needs their own Google Business account to push the data from the platform to Google Maps.

Google requires certain data to be in the GEOJSON file that is pushed to their system. To comply with the requirements, certain data needs to be added to the platform.

Polygons

Floor

Floor polygon should cover all the indoor areas. Floor selection in the portal is off by default. It can be turned on by going to "Floorplan" - "Settings" - "Manage map pitch, bounds etc." and selecting "Floor selection". Then press select tool and click on the floor to ensure that it has been added.

Footprint

Footprint polygon should cover the illustration, To see if it has been added to the portal go to "Visibility" - "Show footprint".

IMDF amenities

Google has its own amenities that need to be matched with the amenities in wayfinding. Amenity manager can be accessed by going to "Settings" and clicking on the empty area under "Data". It can take a couple of tries to actually open the manager, try changing the spot if it doesn't open.

After opening amenity manager there are two different options to choose: amenity or occupant. Amenities should be used for general amenities like toilets and parking, occupants for more detailed description of the amenity like chocolate or sportswear. After selecting the correct amenity / occupant, save the changes from the green tick.

Information of the venue

Certain information of the venue like opening hours, name, website, phone number and address need to be added to the system. This information should be collected to an Excel sheet so that it can be pushed to the portal from Proximi's side.

Exporting IMDF information

After all the data has been added to the portal, it can be exported in IMDF format by going to "Settings" - "Data" - "IMDF export". Zip file will be downloaded and this information can be added to Google through Google Business account.
